Fort Collins

Mary Donnel, a vibrant and cherished member of her community, passed away on April 26, 2025, in Loveland, Colorado, just two days after her 88th birthday. Born on April 24, 1937, in Fort Collins, Colorado, Mary remained deeply connected to her roots and the community that shaped her character.

Mary’s early education began at Boxelder Elementary School, where she showed an early passion for learning and the arts. She was known for playing the piano and actively participated in 4H, which sparked her lifelong love for gardening and nurturing the beauty of nature. After graduating from Timnath High School in 1955, she continued her academic journey at Colorado A&M (now Colorado State University), followed by Colorado Teachers College (now University of Northern Colorado), reflecting her commitment to education and personal growth.

Throughout her life, Mary worked tirelessly, contributing to various sectors and leaving a meaningful impact wherever she went. At the family farm, she learned the values of hard work and dedication. Her professional journey included significant roles at Forney Industries in Fort Collins and as a secretary at Poudre Valley National Bank. Additionally, she became a proud co-owner of Donnel Trash Service, showcasing her entrepreneurial spirit.

Mary married James (Jim) Donnel on December 2, 1962. Their union blessed them with two sons, James Scott Donnel and Jeffrey Lee Donnel. She dedicated her life to nurturing those around her. Her legacy will forever resonate in the hearts of her loved ones.

A passionate musician and talented artist, Mary embraced creativity in all forms. She played music with her cousins Jane and JoAnn in 'The Rythmettes' over the 60 years, most recently entertaining retirement home residents. As an avid reader, she found joy in literature, often sharing her enthusiasm with those around her. Her spirit of adventure shone brightly through her seasoned travels, as she explored new places and cultures, always eager to share her experiences. She had a love for gardening, cultivating a sanctuary of blooming flowers and lush greenery that reflected her nurturing spirit. Additionally, Mary enjoyed watching sports, particularly cheering for the Colorado Rockies, as well as walking, bicycling, and playing golf—activities that brought her happiness and connection with nature.

At a young age Mary was a devoted member of Plymouth Congregational Church, where she engaged in many social activities with the Becker family. As a member of Faith Church in Windsor, CO for over 30 years, Mary could often be found playing piano for various services and special events. Throughout her journey, she remained gracious and loving, a guiding light to many.

She is preceded in death by her beloved parents, Godfred and Rachael Becker (nee Fahrenbruch), and Robert Becker (brother). While Mary has departed from this earthly realm, her spirit will live on through the memories she created and the lives she touched.
