Leona Wolfe Hettinger
December 26, 1922 - May 2, 2020

Leona “Babs” Hettinger, 97, passed away peacefully at UCHeath Greeley surrounded by her family after a good, long life. She was born on December 26, 1922 in Windsor, Colorado to Michael and Katherine (Eichorn) Wolf. Her parents emigrated from the Volga colony of Denhof, Russia in 1913. The youngest of eleven children, Leona helped her family as they worked in the sugar beet fields near Windsor.

Starting her career early,Leona worked at Public Service. She married Raymond Hettinger on January 9, 1960 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Windsor. They had two children, Steven and Julie. After her children were in school, Leona worked at Lieser’s Corner Drug Store until her retirement. Raymond passed away in 2006. Leona remained on her own until she moved in with her son, daughter-in-law, and grandson in late December, 2019.

She attended Windsor schools, was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Windsor and was a member of Faith United Church of Christ.

Leona took pleasure in traveling, going to the mountains, picnics, reading, and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. In her last days, she enjoyed car trips around Weld County to see the multitude of changes taking place, eating ice cream cones from McDonalds, and searching for the beet shack they lived in when she was younger. Living with family the last few months provided Leona great joy and happiness.

Having the blessing of being in her family, Leona is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Steve and LouAnne Hettinger of Evans, CO, son-in-law, Rick Rasmussen of Spring Hill, TN, grandson, Breven Hettinger, granddaughters, Allison and Lauren Rasmussen, step-grandchildren, Corrinne (Frank) Bugg, Dustina Rasmussen, and Max Rasmussen. She is also survived by sisters-in-law, Miriam Wolfe of Greeley and Betty (Walt) Boehnke of Centennial, as well as numerous nieces and nephews and their families.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter, Julie Rasmussen, siblings, Katherine, Mike, Casper, Elizabeth, Henry, Molly, Freda, John, Edward, and Alex.

The family would like to thank Leona’s home health care givers Danielle, Mischa, and Richard at Optimal Health Care, as well as her short-term care givers, and the ER doctors and nurses at UCHealth.
