Harold Steven “Steve” Schmidt, age 77, passed away on Friday, April 17, 2026, in Greeley, CO. Steve was born on August 8, 1948, to Harold and Ruth Schmidt. He grew up on the family farm west of Windsor and graduated from Windsor High School in 1966. He married Karen Kraus on Dec 18, 1969. Together they made their home in Windsor and raised 3 children.
He worked for Mountain Aggregates building roads and bridges across CO. In 1984 he started the Steve Schmidt Trucking Company. He grew a successful trucking company owning 15 trucks at the peak. He was proud that his son and grandson had joined the family business.
Steve enjoyed taking the family out in the boat and participated in various water activities which included water skiing, tubing, and wakeboarding. He loved his yearly lake summertime memberships at Fossil Creek, Windsor Shores, & Black Hollow in the surrounding areas and Phillips Lake in WY where he fished and camped. He enjoyed camping throughout CO & WY which included fishing at the beaver ponds with close family friends. He loved being out in nature and hunted deer, antelope, pheasants, geese, ducks, and doves.
Steve’s passion was fishing in his boat. He loved the peaceful times spent on the water and was at home in his boat. He was an avid fisherman. The last 7 years he got great pleasure fishing in the bay while wintering in South Padre Island, TX, where he had a second home. In CO he fished and caught Trout, Walleye, & Crappie and in TX fished and caught White & Red fish, Sheepshead and Mangrove Snapper. In TX he liked taking his freshly caught fish to restaurants for them to prepare. In TX he liked air boating and enjoyed experiencing a helicopter ride.
Steve is survived by his partner Linda Morehead of Greeley; daughters Lana St. John of Highlands Ranch, Susan (Dave) Ray of Loveland, daughter-in-law Michelle Schmidt of Kersey; grandchildren Michael (Kylie) Schmidt of Milliken, Phillip (Jenny) Ray of Loveland, Tommy & Alyssa St. John of Highlands Ranch, Paige (Robert) Flanigan of Windsor; great grandchildren Deegan & Maverick Schmidt & Zoey, Noah, & Arie Flanigan; sister Nancy Schmidt of Longmont; nephews Peter (Lauren) Freas of Firestone & Andrew Freas of Longmont & niece Shauna Kraus of Greeley.
He is preceded in death by his wife Karen, son Chad, parents Harold & Ruth & brother Bob.
Celebration of Life Service will be May 8, 2026, at 10:30 am at Faith Church of Christ in Windsor, at the location of 1020 Walnut St., Windsor, CO 80550. Graveside services follow at Lakeview Cemetery. Lunch will be provided at the church after the graveside service.
