Obituary for Ann Swift Millard

Print
ANN SWIFT MILLARD, known as "Annie," died peacefully Nov. 28, 2018, after spending her last
days in the company of her beloved family and many of her friends . She was a spunky 87 years
young.

Born in Kansas City, Mo. in 1931, Annie was the second youngest child in a 100 percent Irish clan. This was the city where she would spend eight and a half decades, attending Notre Dame de Sion , a French Convent , from kindergarten through high school graduation, serving her community and building a treasured family of her own.
She met Richard Ford Millard, a World War II Air Force veteran, on a blind date, and they soon married at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in 1951. They had five living children.

Annie worked in banking, in childcare, as a homemaker, and at the family auto supply business
until retiring, but it was her family , devotion to her community and Catholic faith that brought her the greatest joy.
Annie was a familiar face at her church as a lector and Eucharistic minister. She gave her time (and many baked goods) to hospice, food kitchens, Youth Group, Learning Club and Shalom House.

She loved to quilt, sew , read, play cards , dominoes and board games , in addition to cheering on the KC Royals. Her appointments and outings oftentimes revolved around Bingo.

Behind her ready smile, bright spirit and selflessness was a woman who had overcome many
obstacles. She managed diabetes for 50-plus years. She lost an infant daughter, her husband
after nearly 50 years of marriage , and all 6 of her siblings . She also tallied 33+ years of sobriety
and became a source of inspiration to others in recovery groups, continuing even as she moved
to Colorado in 2015.

She is preceded in death by her parents, John Philip and Ruth Mahoney Swift "Mimi"; her six siblings - John, Mary, Jim, Tom, Mike, and Ruthie and an infant daughter, Mary.

She is survived by her five children and their respective spouses: Karen Millard DeMuth (Mike), of Windsor, Colorado., Richard F. Millard Jr. (Janice), of Prairie Village, Kansas., Ellen Millard McKenna (Jerry), of Overland Park, Kansas., Matthew C. Millard of Kansas City, Missouri, and Sarah Millard McNeill (Tim) of Greenville, S.C.; 14 beloved grandchildren; soon-to-be 12 great-grandchildren; 30 nieces and nephews; two sisters-in-law; Dolores Millard and Mary Winger Swift.
